The left is intolerant? No, it’s the right

4/19/2014

I agree with Charles Krauthammer’s April 13 op-ed column, “The left’s intolerance is totalitarianism,” but not in the way he intended.

I wondered what he would say about Republicans’ brand of intolerance, if he weren’t such a partisan writer. I wondered what he would say about their intolerance of people who don’t vote for Republicans, as evidenced by their dependence on gerrymandering and reducing the number of voters through changing the voting laws to get elected.

I wondered what he would say about their intolerance toward the poor and working class, as evidenced by their dependence on the wealthy for campaign contributions, and their refusal to recognize the changing economic dynamics in America.

I wondered what he would say about their intolerance of minorities, as evidenced by the voting restrictions they are pushing.

But I guess he couldn’t see the same things I do, because he doesn’t live in the America I live in.

Local jazz scene could use support

Thanks for your piece on jazz and blues in Toledo (“All that jazz; Still strong in Toledo,” March 30).

No one would be happier than I to have a full-time jazz club again in the city. But there is one in Maumee. And live jazz can be found in one or more venues around the area.

It would be good if the community would support and enjoy the phenomenal jazz talent that is here.

Don’t duplicate boys, girls clubs

A recent Blade commentary suggests that local government take on summer programs for area youths (“Youth initiative will have to be united, creative,” March 13). Toledo already has a full-fledged youth program.

That program is designed to help urban youths at the four Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo locations. Children are guided through activities, games, education, and computer programs by trained employees and counselors.

The city of Toledo does not need to branch out further into attempting to provide summer programs for youths. Toledo’s Boys & Girls Club program is a shining star among many such clubs nationally.

Local government needs to support the many local organizations that offer outstanding programs, guided by trained professionals with a proven track record.

A record winter for sunshine?

We have been told of the records broken during our just-completed historically bad winter, but I wonder whether an unannounced record was set (“Weather shift has Toledo area seeing white,” April 15).

Toledo winters usually are depressing because of dark, cloudy weather. This past winter was an exception. After many of the snowstorms, there came not only low temperatures, but also blue skies and sunshine.

I would like to know whether this was a record winter for hours of sunshine.
