To open pools, seek firms’ help

5/5/2014

Maybe Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins and the powers that be should look for creative funding from a few of the Toledo companies that taxpayers have creatively funded with ridiculously generous tax abatements and other incentives (“City leader seeks 2 more pools, less street repair; Council president aims to redirect $261,000,” April 26).

Why not suggest that Owens Corning or Fiat Chrysler Automobiles sponsor a pool or two? That would be a great way for these companies to give back to a community that has given them so much.

It would be good to open Farr pool

The pool at Jamie Farr Park will not open this summer (“City council approves 2014 budget,” April 1). I enjoyed splashing in that pool when I was a child.

Keeping the pool closed has a societal cost that can’t be recouped with the next levy. Children on a hot day need a safe, clean, and family-oriented place to cool off. I am thankful to the adults who kept the pool open for me.

Maybe a fund-raiser would pay for the pool’s opening.

Street repairs need to be priority

A few years ago, Toledo voters allowed city officials to transfer street-repair funds to the general fund. Now we have well-paid firefighters and police officers, and new and reopened police and fire stations. But my street is impassable.

The street was in bad shape before this past winter. We won’t be able to get to the local swimming pool because the streets are so bad.

As a retired teacher, I’m all for pools, kids, and recreation. But city officials want to use street repair funds to fix pools. Come on. My street is desperately in need of repair.

Cut crime; open pools in June

I would like to see the city of Toledo open all recreational venues for the summer on June 15, not in July. The city will be rewarded for its effort by lower crime and vandalism.

City officials should find money somewhere for all of the swimming pools to be repaired.
