To the editor: Fraternities have more to offer than parties

I felt compelled to write after seeing one more article about fraternities being shut down or suspended (Nov. 17, OSU suspends all fraternity activities). I want to provide a different view on these fraternal organizations.

My son is a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity at University of Toledo. I encouraged my son to consider joining a fraternity because I was a member of a sorority and have only great memories and experiences through the Greek System. 

Fraternities and sororities not only provide social activity, but they also result in lifelong friendships, support in many different avenues, and networking opportunities. Yes, I was slightly hesitant to encourage him because of all the negative you hear surrounding these organizations, but I also know it can be a positive experience.

I have met many of his fraternity brothers, and was, and still am, so impressed with the Sigma Phi Epsilon group of young men at UT. They have strict policies on grades and hazing, and they stick to it. They hold very high standards and help any members who may be struggling to achieve good grades. They encourage not only campus involvement but community involvement.

I have seen them institute change when standards aren’t being met. I know there are nondrinking members, along with very social members. Members are brought before a standards committee for breaking any of the rules set in place and may eventually be dismissed if they are repeat offenders. 

The fraternity has a very strong support system in their alumni, along with local leaders and their national organization.

Yes, fraternities do party. I am sure that some of these fraternities being shut down have some very good members, but the masses pay for the actions of a few.

My son has never been pressured into doing anything and has grown in many different ways through being part of his fraternity. It has been an experience he will only benefit from in the future.

I find it impressive when a large group of young men can handle and govern themselves such as Sigma Phi Epsilon at UT. They are a very strong group of young men and should be commended.
