To the editor: Who is more afraid of whom?

There are over 661,000 people with concealed carry licenses in Ohio. Julia Kustra writes, “That’s a lot of people afraid to leave home without a gun.”

The Blade recently reported on concealed-carry gun licenses issued in 2017, with a rough estimate of over 661,000 total licenses held in the state of Ohio (March 3, “Thousands got concealed-carry licenses in 2017”).

That’s a lot of people afraid to leave home without a gun.

On the other hand, we have all these establishments prohibiting guns on their premises, concealed or openly carried. No guns allowed in hospitals, health centers, most businesses, courts, the Supreme Court, the U.S. Capitol, police stations, sheriff’s offices, fire stations, post offices. Even gatherings like gun shows and NRA conventions prohibit guns.

I wonder who is more afraid of whom.

Headlines require care

It’s ironic that the same day the ombudsman writes about the difficulty of drafting accurate and informative news headlines (March 11, “No ethics concern if Blade writer switches to editorials”), this gem appears in the same edition: “Nun in Katy Perry suit dies after collapse.”

The headline made me curious as I tried to picture why a nun would be wearing a Katy Perry suit and how that caused her to collapse. Was it too hot? Well, apparently not, as the article referred to a real estate lawsuit between Katy Perry and a convent.
