Here’s Food for Thought: Dine Thoughtfully

Food for Thought is dedicated to helping feed those in need in Toledo through mobile pantries, Saturday morning sandwich picnics, and other creative initiatives. The organization invites you to its new Dine Thoughtfully series of talks and presentations.
The kick-off event, a Balcony Buffet Brunch, will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 22 at the plaza of My Brother's Place on the second floor of Trinity Episcopal Church at 316 Adams St.
Manhattan’s Restaurant will prepare the menu, and Black Kite Coffee and Pies will offer coffee service. Friendship Farms in Waterville, which has already donated more than 400 pounds of freshly grown items to Food for Thought this year, will provide produce for the brunch. All Crumbs Artisan Bakery, which provides the breads for Food for Thought’s peanut butter and jelly sandwich picnics, will be contributing baked goods.
Details for the rest of the Dine Thoughtfully series are yet to come, but will involve growers, restaurants, and other members of Toledo’s food scene who are committed to Food for Thought and those it serves.

Kroger food drive
Head down to Fifth Third Field to cheer on the Mud Hens as they take on the Charlotte Knights at 7 p.m. Friday, and be sure to bring some non-perishable foods with you to support Kroger Food Drive Friday. Collection bins will be easy to find, near the guest services desk behind home plate. Fans who donate will be given a reusable shopping bag, courtesy of Kroger.
Approximately one-fourth of the people in our community are dealing with food insufficiency. The Mud Hens and Kroger want to be part of the solution, and will donate the collected items to area organizations that help to feed those who are hungry.
Salsa fest
Bring your best salsa and compete for bragging rights and glory at the Toledo Farmers’ Market’s Salsa Fest, being held at 525 Market St. from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 22. There are two categories, professional and amateur, so everyone can participate. Be sure to bring an ingredient list, to let those who need to be careful of allergens know what’s in your fabulous fiesta of flavor.

Humane Ohio benefit
Humane Ohio’s fourth annual Spay-ghetti and No Balls Dinner and Silent Auction is coming up Sept. 20. It will be held at the Holiday Inn French Quarter,10630 Fremont Pike in Perrysburg, from 5 to 8 p.m. Tickets cost $30 per person, and all proceeds from the event will directly support controlling the pet population through the spaying and neutering of area cats and dogs.
Guests can choose one of four specially created pasta dishes to enjoy: herb fettuccine alfredo, sun-dried tomato and gorgonzola ravioli florentine, radiatori arrabbiati, and linguine aglio e olio. Dinners will also include garlic butter rolls, salad, beverage, and a dessert.
The silent auction portion of the event is in need of items. Humane Ohio would like to put together baskets, with some proposed themes including wine, tea, coffee, or chocolate; kitchen essentials; pizza maker; cookie; tailgating; and romantic date night. If you can contribute a complete basket worth a minimum of $25 or items that could be packaged together, it would be greatly appreciated.
