Area physician's license is permanently revoked

COLUMBUS - The state Medical Board voted yesterday to permanently revoke a former Toledo-area physician's certificate to practice medicine and surgery in Ohio.

The 7-0 vote followed the report of a physician hired by the state who concluded Dr. David Vinson, Jr.'s “technical skills are below the standard level for a surgeon,” board spokesman Lauren Lubow said. Dr. Vinson, 44, had a general-surgery private practice in Fulton County from July, 1999, to December, 2000, and in Paulding County from about July to December, 2000.

Sharon E. Murphy, an attorney hearing examiner for the state Medical Board, said Dr. Vinson made technical and judgment errors in eight of 10 cases that Dr. Edwin C. Ellison analyzed. Dr. Ellison is head of Ohio State University's Department of Surgery.

Dr. Vinson couldn't be reached for comment. He can appeal the board's decision to Franklin County Common Pleas Court.

He told the hearing examiner that in August, 2002, he had started the occupational medicine residency program at the University of Illinois at Chicago, but had been unable to get a license to practice medicine and surgery in Illinois because of the allegations facing him in Ohio.
