MCO teams with Owens for EMS program

Leaders at Owens Community College and the Medical College of Ohio yesterday announced another partnership, this one involving the creation of an emergency medical services certificate program.

The new offering, one requiring about 28 hours of course work, will be available on MCO's campus for Owens students, Owens' Provost Paul Unger said.

The class is scheduled to include exposure to an ambulance currently under construction at the medical school. Instructors will be MCO faculty members.

Students who complete the certificate program will be able to apply the credits toward an associate's degree in Owens' proposed Emergency Medical Management Program, which will be up for approval by the Ohio Board of Regents on April 21.

Earlier this week, the two institutions announced a collaborative effort that will allow Owens' faculty members to teach some of their classes on the MCO campus. It will mark the two-year school's first campus presence in Lucas County. Owens has campuses in Perrysburg Township and Findlay.

Leaders at both schools describe the relationship between a medical and community college as unusual.
