The Western Lake Erie Region of the American Red Cross today issued a statement saying the storm has caused numerous blood drives to be canceled in Michigan and Ohio, resulting in a shortage of about 2,000 expected donations.

The storm resulted in the first cancelations of blood drives Wednesday in more than 10 years. Twenty-three area hospitals have been asked to postpone their orders unless faced with an emergency. Blood drives, as well as collections at the West Toledo donor center at 3510 Executive Parkway, resumed today.
