Danbury Township, Erie County health agency get grants

6/24/2008

Two northwest Ohio Communities are among recipients of grants the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Office of Coastal Management recently awarded for projects to protect the Lake Erie shoreline.

Danbury Township will receive $50,000 toward construction of a trail and boardwalk at the Meadowbrook Marsh nature preserve in Ottawa County.

The $103,000 project will add a 900-foot trail from the preserve s parking lot to the marsh and an 80-foot boardwalk alongside it, giving visitors space for fishing and picnicking.

The other recipient, the Erie County Health Department, will receive $42,957 toward an $87,000 investigation into the sources of pollution in the county s Old Woman Creek watershed. Household sewage and storm water drainage systems are possible culprits.

During the investigation, officials will determine what can be done about the creek s pollution, after which the county will decide on a remedy.
