OSU extension seeking reports on gypsy moths

7/24/2009

Now s the time to report signs of gypsy moth infestation, Ohio State University Extension says.

Fieldwork to assess the extent of egg masses across Lucas County begins early next month. Information from that survey, plus data reported by residents, will help the extension office make its case for 2010 grants from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to kill the pests.

The OSU Extension asks area residents to leave an egg mass alone if they think they have discovered one.

Notify the agency s office at 419-243-MOTH (6684) or 419-578-6783. Questions or observations can be sent to mghotline@ag.osu.edu.

The moth is an exotic species that, in its caterpillar stage, feeds on plant leaves. It has been in Lucas County, especially the Sylvania area, for years.
