50 layoffs expected at University of Toledo Medical Center
10/12/2009The University of Toledo Medical Center on Monday began notifying about 50 clinical employees throughout the hospital who will be affected by another round of layoffs to help reduce operating expenses in a tough economy, officials said.
The exact number of layoffs will depend on bumping rights among union employees, said Tobin Klinger, a UT spokesman.
There is no specific dollar amount UT is trying to save with the cutbacks, Mr. Klinger said. There are about 3,500 employees at UTMC, the former Medical College of Ohio Hospital.
Monday, UTMC employees received a letter from UT President Dr. Lloyd Jacobs and Dr. Jeffrey Gold, UT's provost and executive vice president for health affairs and medical college dean, telling them layoffs are needed to reduce operating expenses.
"This decision was not easy, however given the ongoing economic situation we must continue to find ways to achieve more with fewer resources," the letter said in part.
In April, UT laid off about 40 employees on its Health Science Campus as part of a plan to help close a $16 million budget shortfall.
Last year, the hospital closed its 12-bed geriatric psychiatric unit, eliminating 37 jobs, as part of an overall effort to remain efficient in a troubled economy.
