  • Few things are more fascinating than our bodies, especially when they malfunction.

How are the gases we breathe exchanged into the blood stream? What's a seizure? Why do some chemicals affect the brain's neurotransmitters so powerfully? What's new with minimally invasive surgery? And what does a PM&R physician do?

Mini Med School, beginning next Wednesday, invites people to five evening sessions at the University of Toledo College of Medicine, May 4 through June 1. Each night, two experts who are on the faculty or are physicians who also work with med students, will lead the two-hour session, and much will be interactive, with props such joints and x-rays, and time for questions.

"The University of Toledo and the College of Medicine has a lot of wonderful things that people aren't aware of," said James Kleshinski, associate professor of medicine and associate dean for admissions. Session leaders will aim to avoid medical jargon and scientific terminology, he noted.

The college previously offered Mini Med school in 2009, and a few times in the previous decade.

    Dates, topics, and presenters include:

May 4: Orthopedics and rehabilitation, with Jason Levine, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery and sports medicine, and Steven Farrell, associate professor of orthopedic surgery and chief of physical medicine and rehabilitation.

May 11: Pathology with Amira Gohara, professor of pathology, and Luis E. De Las Casas, associate professor and chief of anatomic pathology.

May 18: Pulmonary medicine with Patricia Metting, professor of physiology, pharmacology, medicine, and Ragheb Assaly, professor of medicine and director of medical intensive care unit and internal medicine residency program.

May 25: Neurosciences and epilepsy with Bryan Yamamoto, professor and chairman of the department of neurosciences, and Imran Ali, professor of neurology and associate dean of clinical medical education.

June 1: Vascular surgery and minimally invasive surgery with Gerald Zelenock, professor and chairman of the department of surgery, and David Heidt, assistant professor of general surgery.

Registration has been brisk, said Dr. Kleshinski, and there are still a few slots left. Mini Med School will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. five Wednesdays beginning May 4 and continuing through June 1 in the Collier Building, Room 1000B on the University of Toledo's Health Science Campus, 3000 Arlington Ave. Use Entrance 4 off of Arlington and park in Lot 44. The cost is $50; $35 for students and seniors. Seating is limited and registration closes Friday. Register at 419-383-4237. A registration form can also be downloaded at utoledo.edu/med/cme and faxed to the college, but online registration is not offered.
