In the last few weeks, the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department has noticed a rise in norovirus, a highly contagious illness also known as stomach flu.

Symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever 12 to 48 hours after exposure, and they typically last 24 to 72 hours.

There is no specific treatment, and those infected are advised to rest and drink extra liquids to avoid dehydration, according to the health department.

Noroviruses are found in stool and vomit of infected people. Washing hands with soap and water, especially after using the toilet or changing diapers and before eating or preparing food, is recommended to reduce contact and spread of the illness.
