Suspended doctor goes on trial March 20

3/6/2001

ADRIAN - A pain doctor whose license was suspended in 1998 after the death of a patient is facing a jury trial March 20 in Lenawee County Circuit Court.

The trial stems from a civil suit filed by one of Jeffrey Askanazi's patients at Adrian's Bixby Medical Center who claims he didn't treat her properly. Mr. Askanazi worked at Bixby Medical Center for about a year in 1997. Lenawee Circuit Judge Timothy Pickard granted a motion yesterday to have Bixby Medical Center produce the doctor's credential file and to separate the cases against him.

The original complaint named 10 of Mr. Askanazi's patients, including one who died after being treated. Another patient suffered paralysis and died of a drug overdose. Most of the patients alleging mistreatment are from Greenville, Mich., where he last practiced.
