New Michigan law limits riders in open truck bed

3/21/2001

ADRIAN - Looking to ride in the back of a pickup truck in Michigan? Think again.

Beginning today, no one under 18 years old will be allowed to ride in the open bed of a pickup moving more than 15 mph. The state law is designed to prevent deaths and injuries.

Violators face a possible fine, which will be determined by each jurisdiction, Sgt. Charles Hockanson said. Previously, no laws restricted children and teenagers from riding in the back of pickups.
