Hillsdale, 3 townships to vote on library district

7/9/2001

HILLSDALE - Residents in three Hillsdale County townships will join city residents at the polls Sept. 11 to determine whether the local library will become a district library.

The special election is scheduled to see whether residents would support a 1-mill tax issue for the proposed district library. Residents in Cambria, Hillsdale, and Jefferson townships will vote. City residents also will vote, although they would not pay more than the 1-mill tax they already pay for the library.

The three townships have contracts with the city to use the library. Additional money brought in from the tax issue would help with a library expansion.

If approved, residents with a $100,000 home would pay an additional $50 a year in taxes. A mill is $1 for every $1,000 of assessed valuation.
