MONROE -- State Sen. Beverly Hammerstrom (R., Temperance) was appointed vice chairwoman of the new Senate Great Lakes Conservation Task Force.

The panel will play an instrumental role in formulating environmentally sound legislation on water issues in Michigan. The task force will hold eight hearings across the state to gather information from concerned citizens.

The first hearing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 1 in the dining hall of the Monroe Community College administration building, 1555 Raisinville Rd.

Resident input gathered at these meetings will be compiled in a report on the overall condition of the Great Lakes and their tributaries.
