Adrian mural depicts city's Mexican heritage

10/29/2001

ADRIAN - A third mural highlighting city history was dedicated Saturday - this one depicting the migration of Mexicans to the area and portraying Mexican heroes.

The mural, on the East Side Customs building at 123 Tecumseh St., is the third such painting on the city's east side.

The works are a part of a long-term revitalization project in a 26-block area that was once plagued by crime, gangs, and drugs.

Artist Connie Mirelez painted the unnamed mural as well as one on the Associated Charities building with a design that captures the issues and victories of today's youth.

The energetic colors match those seen on the Power of Humanity mural, painted by a national artist last year.

That mural, on the Lenawee County Transportation building, depicts the culture and the history of the predominantly rural southeast Michigan county.

Officials said the projects are the result of a $500,000 state grant and plenty of volunteers who are working to revitalize the neighborhood.
