MILAN, Mich. - A Monroe County sheriff's deputy shot a man who pointed a rifle at the deputy in a house in London Township, about three miles east of here, early yesterday morning, authorities said.

Sheriff's deputies arrived at the house in the 12000 block of Darling Road about 4:30 a.m. to investigate reports of gunshots, Michigan State Police said.

Deputies saw a man sitting on a couch in the residence with his head back. The deputies knocked on the front door to check on the man. He awakened and told deputies to enter, but they could not because the door was locked.

Deputies said the man then pointed a rifle at them and refused to put itdown. As he pointed the rifle at one deputy, the deputy fired his gun, state police said.

Shots struck the man in the left arm and chest area. He retreated farther into the residence and eventually left it before he was apprehended and taken to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ypsilanti, Mich. His name and condition were not available last night.
