PASADENA, Calif. Texas quarterback Vince Young wasn t about to let Michigan spoil the Longhorns first trip to the Rose Bowl.

Young ran for four touchdowns, passed for another and engineered the game-winning drive.

Dusty Mangum s 37-yard field goal on the final play capped a furious rally by No. 6 Texas and lifted the Longhorns to an amazing 38-37 victory over No. 13 Michigan last night before 93,468 fans.

I owe everything to Vince Young, Mangum said. He drove us down the field and put me in position to make that game-winning kick.

Young, the game s offensive MVP, did what every other mobile quarterback has done to Michigan s defense this season he ran through it and around it.

He scored on runs of 20, 60, 10 and 23 yards and finished with 192 yards on 21 carries. Young also tossed an 11-yard touchdown pass to tight end David Thomas and helped the Longhorns finish 11-1.

Vince Young is a tremendous athlete, Michigan receiver Braylon Edwards said. The things he did against our defense were just outstanding. After a performance like this, I d have to compare him to Michael Vick.

He s a phenomenal player. I admire what he did.

Michigan, which lost its final two games to finish 9-3, rallied four times against the Longhorns before losing.

UM had a 31-21 lead after three quarters, thanks to freshman quarterback Chad Henne and Edwards.

Henne tied the Rose Bowlrecord with four touchdown passes, including three to Edwards, who caught scoring passes of 39, 8 and 9 yards and used the Rose Bowl as a national stage in his final college game.

Edwards three touchdown catches he had 10 receptions for 109 yards overall set a Rose Bowl record. He finished with 39 in his career and broke Anthony Carter s school record and Big Ten mark of 37.

We played pretty darn good offensively and I had an OK game, Edwards said. But it s not a complete day when you don t win.

That s because Young upstaged the efforts of Henne and Edwards.

Just when it appeared that Michigan had taken control of the game, Young scored his third rushing touchdown on a 10-yard run with 9:51 remaining to pull the Longhorns within three at 31-28.

Garrett Rivas second field goal, a 32-yarder, put Michigan back on top at 34-28 with 6:09 left, then Young scored on a 23-yard run to put Texas back on top at 35-34.

Rivas then kicked a 42-yarder as Michigan regained a 37-35 advantage with 3:04 remaining, but the Wolverines defense couldn t hold serve and Mangum won the game with his right foot.

I think you have to give Texas, especially Vince Young, a lot of credit, said Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, whose team lost to Southern California 28-14 in last year s Rose Bowl.

Defensively, we missed too many tackles. You score 37 points, it should be enough.

It wasn t.

I m very disappointed. We don t have any excuses.

After falling behind 21-14 early in the third quarter on Young s second touchdown run, a 60-yarder, the Wolverines reeled off 17 unanswered points to grab a 31-21 lead.

First, Steve Breaston hauled in a 50-yard touchdown reception on a crossing route over the middle, and then Henne tossed his fourth touchdown pass, and Edwards snagged his third.

Rivas capped the Michigan scoring with a 44-yard field goal that was set up by Prescott Burgess interception and 23-yard return.

Texas had leads of 14-7 and 7-0 in the first half, but couldn t hold onto either one as Edwards grabbed a pair of scoring passes from Henne.

Young also accounted for two first-half scores.

With 4:16 left in the second quarter, Young hit David Thomas in the flat and he used Neale Tweedie s block on Ryan Mundy near the goal line as a springboard for an 11-yard touchdown reception that snapped a 7-7 tie.

The score came on a third-and-one play Texas was 7-for-10 on third-down conversions in the opening half and capped a 13-play, 58-yard drive.

Young also engineered a 12-play, 85-yard drive late in the first quarter that was capped by his 20-yard scamper on a draw play.

He ran untouched through the middle of Michigan s defense on his way to the end zone for the game s first score.

I just tried to make as many big plays as I could, Young said. I think I succeeded at that.

You won t get any arguments from Michigan s beleaguered defense.
