2 Michigan Democrats criticize bond plan to expand landfills

4/6/2005

LANSING - Two Democrats in the Michigan House of Representatives yesterday called on Waste Management Inc. to withdraw its request for $68 million in tax-exempt development bonds.

The bonds would be used to finance expansion of landfills in Michigan.

House Democratic Leader Dianne Byrum (D., Onondaga) and state Rep. Herb Kehrl (D., Monroe) said public money should not be used to encourage more out-of-state trash in Michigan.

Waste Management's request is to be heard tomorrow in Lansing by board of the Michigan Strategic Fund.

Heather Browne, Waste Management director of corporate communications, could not be reached for comment.
