Hillsdale Co. jail gets perfect state rating

10/31/2005

HILLSDALE The Hillsdale County jail has received a 100 percent rating from the Michigan Department of Corrections for the fourth year in a row, according to Sheriff Stan Burchardt.

The jail administrator, Capt. Ed Hodshire, said his research showed that was an achievement reached by fewer than 20 of Michigan s counties.

The 100 percent compliance rating was based on management of the inmate population, sanitation, food service, and programs available to inmates.

The previous year s incident reports are also factored into the scoring matrix.

Captain Hodshire said the jail s listed capacity is 67 but the number of inmates is generally in the high 70s and low 80s, Captain Hodshire said he and his staff of eight jailers work continually with the district and circuit court judges on releases and bonds to keep the population within a range that the state considers acceptable.
