MONROE Lake Erie Transit will receive $693,000 to buy two new hybrid buses and $495,000 to help expand its maintenance facility parking garage.

The money, approved by the Federal Transit Administration, is part of a $6.7 million award to the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART), which serves Monroe, Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties.

Mark Jagodzinski, Lake Erie Transit general manager, said the hybrid buses offer fuel savings and are environmentally friendly.

Lake Erie Transit is Monroe County s only public transit agency.

It operates fixed routes and Dial-A-Ride operations in the city of Monroe and in Bedford, Frenchtown, and Monroe townships.
