DETROIT A plan approved by city economic development officials calls for Tiger Stadium to be razed by September 2008.

The plan, approved Wednesday by the city s Economic Growth Corp., gives the nonprofit Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy until late July to find a feasible approach to preserving part of the stadium.

The nonprofit is trying to save Tiger Stadium s main entrance behind home plate.

The plan has the backing of Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, who last year announced that the former home of the Detroit Tigers would be demolished. The site would be used for a mixed-use retail and residential development.

Memorabilia from Tiger Stadium would be sold, and most of the old baseball field would be used as a public field.

The Tigers began playing at the stadium in 1912. The team left following the 1999 season to move into Comerica Park, about a mile away.
