ANN ARBOR - Suspended Michigan football player Mike Milano was charged with two counts of assault stemming from an incident that occurred Oct. 12.

Diane Brown, spokesman for the campus' public safety department, declined to name the suspect because an arraignment had not yet been held. But she said the suspect is 22-years old and from Rocky River, Ohio - which describes Milano.

Brown said one of the counts is felony assault, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $5,000 fine. She said negotiations were underway with the suspect's attorney for the suspect to turn himself in.

Milano, a junior walk-on running back at UM, allegedly caused serious harm to another student-athlete during the assault - Wolverines hockey player Steve Kampfer - in the wee hours on Oct 12.

A UM football spokesman said Milano hasn't practiced with the team in weeks and remains suspended indefinately.
