THINGS WE KNOW

• Rich Rodriguez' job security is delicate. With a record of 8-16 in two years, including just three conference wins, Rodriguez, by all accounts, needs to respond strongly this year to keep his job. A third straight year without a bowl game could be too ugly to ignore.

• UM's defensive backfield is depleted. Starters at corner will be sophomore J.T. Floyd, who was given a chance but was unable to keep his starting job last year, and an undistinguished senior in James Rogers. At safety will be sophomore and former walk-on Jordan Kovacs, and redshirt freshman Cam Gordon, a receiver until this spring. No matter how you spin it, the secondary does not look promising right now.

• Arguably the best lineman, linebacker and defensive back from last year are gone. And that was a defense that came close to supplanting the 2008 version as the worst in program history. Added experience, speed and depth, could offset the losses of Brandon Graham, Stevie Brown, and Donovan Warren.

• Turnovers crushed the Wolverines in '09. Allowing 12 more turnovers than they produced, UM ranked worst in the Big Ten by six and was particularly hindered by give-a-ways in losses to Iowa and Ohio State - games they otherwise played decently in. Inexperience at quarterback was a culprit, and that inexperience has only slightly matured. But the turnover margin needs to improve significantly.

• It has been estimated that the renovated Michigan Stadium will produce 30 percent more noise than in the past. Because of the added seats, UM again has the highest capacity stadium in college football. Could a nosier, larger crowd be worth an extra home win?

THINGS WE'LL FIND OUT

• Will one of the three quarterbacks emerge as a starter on a full-time basis?

• Will the offense be able to score against good defenses?

• Neither Brendan Gibbons nor Seth Broekhuizen has received praise from the coaches in camp, so will either of the kickers be adequate?
