Michigan has hired San Diego State's Brady Hoke
1/11/2011ANN ARBOR --- Michigan has hired San Diego State's Brady Hoke as its next football coach, a school official said Tuesday in a statement released at 4 p.m.
Hoke, a former UM defensive assistant under Lloyd Carr, led his team to a 9-4 record this year. Hoke, who once led Ball State to an undefeated regular season, is 47-50 in eight seasons as a head coach.
Les Miles, the successful Louisiana State football coach and Michigan alumnus, was in consideration for the job, but then reports from Detroit and Baton Rouge, La., said he would stay at LSU and not come to Michigan to coach his alma mater.
Michigan had bypassed him in 2007 and hired Rich Rodriguez, who was dismissed last week after three years and 15 wins.
Some think Miles, who will turn 58 during next season, may not accept the Michigan job if offered. The belief is that his current job is better than the one he'd be leaving for.
The contracts signed by Rodriguez (December, 2007) and Miles (an extension in April, 2008) suggest Michigan may have to open up its wallet if it wants Miles.
It wasn't immediately known what Hoke will be paid. Rodriguez made $2.5 million, the third highest in the Big Ten. \
