Late field goal lifts Michigan over in-state rival Michigan State

ANN ARBOR --  The Paul Bunyan Trophy will return to the University of Michigan.

Brendan Gibbons' 38-yard field goal with five seconds left gave No. 23 Michigan a 12-10 win over Michigan State today at Michigan Stadium.

On its final drive of the game, Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson found Drew Dileo for a 20-yard reception, which set up Gibbon's field goal from the Spartans 21-yard line.

Robinson finished 14 for 29 passing with 163 yards and one interception, and rushed for 96 yards on 20 carries.

Michigan (5-2, 3-0 Big Ten Conference) travels to Lincoln, Neb., to face Nebraska at 8 p.m. Oct. 27.

THIRD QUARTER

Michigan State quarterback Andrew Maxwell connected with tight end Paul Lang for a two-yard touchdown less than eight minutes into the second half to help the Spartans take a 7-6 lead.

The Spartans strung together a 10-play, 75-yard drive to take their first lead of the game, a drive punctuated by Tony Lippett's 10-yard run on a broken play, which placed the Spartans at the Michigan 2-yard line to set up the go-ahead touchdown.

HALFTIME

Brendan Gibbons' 24-yard field goal less than five minutes into the second quarter and Matt Wile's 48-yard field goal with 1:07 left in the half helped Michigan take a 6-0 lead over Michigan State.

Michigan State kicker Dan Conroy's 38-yard field goal attempt went wide left with 5:03 left in the half.

FIRST QUARTER

Michigan State and No. 23 Michigan ended the first half scoreless.

Michigan outgained Michigan State 52-43, and the two teams combined for three first downs. Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson has six carries for four yards but is 4 for 4 passing for 37 yards.
