Wolverines defeat Chippewas 59-9 at home

ANN ARBOR - Devin Gardner accounted for three touchdowns as the University of Michigan football team defeated Central Michigan 59-9 in its season opener today at Michigan Stadium.

Gardner, a redshirt junior, finished 10 for 15 passing for 162 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, as freshman Shane Morris took over at quarterback late in the third quarter. Gardner also scored two rushing touchdowns and ran for 52 yards on seven carries.

Playing in his first game since he broke his leg in November, Fitzgerald Toussaint had 57 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries for Michigan. Freshman Derrick Green led the Wolverines with 58 yards on 11 carries.

Michigan hosts Notre Dame at 8 p.m. Saturday at Michigan Stadium.
