ANN ARBOR — Dan Dierdorf is coming out of retirement to return to the University of Michigan.

Michigan's athletic department announced today that Dierdorf, a former Wolverines football player, will be part of UM's football broadcast team.

Dierdorf will replace Frank Beckmann, who retired after the 2013 season, and will join Jim Brandstatter. Dierdorf will take on color commentary and analysis, while Brandstatter moves to play-by-play.

Dierdorf, 64, was an offensive tackle at Michigan and played for the NFL's St. Louis Cardinals from 1971 to 1983. Dierdorf worked for 30 years calling NFL games for ABC and CBS and was part of ABC’s Monday Night Football Crew from 1987-99 before moving to CBS until his retirement from television following the 2013 season.

A Canton, Ohio, native, Dierdorf is a member of the NFL Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame.
