Motorcycle, car show to aid Red Cross

It promises to be one of the biggest local fund-raisers in recent memory - as long as Mother Nature cooperates.

About 60,000 people are expected to attend Sunday's classic car and motorcycle show at the UAW Local 14-GM Powertrain Family Recreation Park on Jackman Road just south of Alexis Road.

Proceeds from the event, which has a $1 admission fee, will benefit the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. It is scheduled from noon to 3 p.m.

The event - which will also feature an auction and swap meet - is the brainchild of WKKO-FM (99.9) morning team Gary Shores and Harvey J. Steele and co-sponsored by WRQN-FM (93.5).

The local Cumulus stations have raised more than $625,000 for the Red Cross since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Shores said. Proceeds from Sunday's event could exceed $100,000.

“We all feel the same emotions about Sept. 11,” Shores said. “Everyone wants to help. With the 50,000-watt intercom [on WKKO], we were able to make it easy for people to help the Red Cross. The response has been absolutely unbelievable. That says so much about people here in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan.”

Dozens of items - including a 1965 Thunderbird, an autographed Dale Earnhardt trading card, and a set of Mac gold-plated tools - will be auctioned off, with proceeds going to the Red Cross.

More than 2,000 classic cars and more than 500 motorcycles are expected to be on display.
