Director to speak in Hillsdale
2/10/2010Director, actor, and author Peter Bogdanovich will talk about director Frank Capra at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich., during a March program on the movies of 1939.
Hillsdale's Center for Constructive Alternatives hosts a program March 7-11 about four movies from 1939. It includes showings and discussions of director Sam Wood's Goodbye, Mr. Chips on March 7, John Ford's Young Mr. Lincoln on March 8, and Ernst Lubitsch's Ninotchka on March 9. Bogdanovich speaks March 10 after a showing of Capra's Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.
Films that Bogdanovich directed include The Last Picture Show, What's Up, Doc?, Paper Moon, and Mask.
Kate Gosselin has a new book, I Just Want You to Know, scheduled for release in April.
Christian book publisher Zondervan said yesterday the book features excerpts, prayers, and memories from Gosselin's journal, offering readers a look at her life during the three years her family went from obscurity to fame on TLC's Jon & Kate Plus 8.
Jon & Kate Plus 8 filmed the lives of the Gosselins and their eight children - twins and sextuplets - at their home in Wernersville, Pa. Their marriage dissolved, and the show ended last year.
Miley Cyrus has organized an online auction to benefit the relief effort in Haiti, and Britney Spears, Hugh Jackman, Ellen DeGeneres, Julianne Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, Demi Lovato, and others will donate items and experiences.
Cyrus is donating several items, including the dress she wore to the 2010 Grammy Awards. Fans can also bid on Spears' 2008 MTV Video Music Awards dress, a set visit to Jackman's new film, Lovato's tour wardrobe, and other items. The auction runs until Feb. 18.
All proceeds go to the American Red Cross.

NEW YORK (AP) - Little more than a week ago, Lil Wayne was reinforcing his place in rap's pantheon with a commanding performance at the Grammy Awards ceremony. His latest album, "Rebirth," was officially released Feb. 2.
Now Lil Wayne, one of music's biggest sellers and rap's hottest stars, is poised to spend as much as the next year in a jail cell instead of a spotlight.
The Grammy-winning rapper was due to be sentenced Tuesday afternoon after pleading guilty in a gun possession case. His plea deal calls for a year in jail, though good behavior could shave that to as little as eight months.
"This is Lil Wayne going to jail. Nobody can tell me what that's like," the rapper told Rolling Stone magazine for its latest issue. "I just say I'm looking forward to it."
He's likely to start serving his sentence immediately, making him the latest in a string of rap stars to do time after topping the charts.
His plea deal calls for him to serve his sentence not in state prison but in the city jail system, where rapper Foxy Brown spent about eight months in 2007 and 2008 for a probation violation involving a fight she had with manicurists in a nail salon.
Rapper Remy Ma spent several months in a city jail in 2008 while awaiting sentencing for shooting a woman outside a nightclub. She's now serving an eight-year sentence in state prison.
City Department of Correction spokesman Stephen Morello wouldn't discuss any arrangements being made to house Lil Wayne among the roughly 13,500 inmates in the massive Rikers Island complex and other jails. Most inmates are awaiting trial.
Some inmates, including Foxy Brown, are separated from the general population because of their celebrity or other reasons, but "there's no special-inmates wing," Morello said.
Lil Wayne's attorney didn't return telephone calls seeking comment Monday.
Lil Wayne, 27, pleaded guilty in October to attempted criminal possession of a weapon, admitting he illegally had a loaded .40-caliber semiautomatic gun on his tour bus in July 2007. Police found the weapon when they stopped the bus after a Manhattan concert.
A rapper since he was a teenager, Lil Wayne, born Dwayne Carter, became known for his voluminous output and collaborations with other artists.
His career has hit a peak in the last two years. His "Tha Carter III" led 2008 album sales with 2.8 million copies sold and featured such hits as the No. 1 smash "Lollipop." His Grammys include 2008's best rap solo performance award, for "A Milli."

GENEVA (AP) - The U.N. refugee agency says its goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie is heading to Haiti to meet with earthquake victims.
The Hollywood star spoke with hospitalized Haitian survivors in the neighboring Dominican Republic on Monday.
UNHCR spokesman Andrej Mahecic said Jolie would travel to Haiti later Tuesday.
He provided no details of her planned itinerary for security reasons.
Jolie has previously visited Iraq, Thailand, Pakistan and other countries with UNHCR.

MEXICO CITY (AP) - Actor Benicio del Toro says he signed on for the lead role in "The Wolfman" remake because he has a soft spot for monsters.
The Oscar winner says the werewolf he portrays and many other dark characters in literature get a bad rap. In a Monday meeting with journalists in Mexico City, he said: "I have always been on the monsters' side."
The movie is directed by Joe Johnston and co-stars Emily Blunt, Anthony Hopkins and Hugo Weaving. It modernizes the myth of the werewolf and adds more blood and violence to the plot.
But del Toro, who also co-produced the film, says there's more to the story: "I see the werewolf as a victim; they always judge him without any understanding."
The film is scheduled for release Feb. 12.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Andre Leon Talley will help crown "America's Next Top Model."
The over-the-top 60-year-old Vogue editor-at-large will join Tyra Banks, photographer Nigel Barker and a weekly guest judge on the panel of the 14th season of the CW modeling competition (premiering March 10 at 8 p.m. EST), the network announced Monday. Previous "Top Model" judges have included runway coach J. Alexander and supermodel Janice Dickinson.
Talley, a veteran fashionista, is a regular in the front row at fashion shows in New York, Paris, London and Milan.
