Jane Fonda doesn't take Cannes fashion 'too seriously'

NEW YORK -- Don't get Jane Fonda wrong. The 74-year-old actress got a thrill when she wowed the fashion crowd at France's Cannes Film Festival in a form-fitting, two-tone Stella McCartney gown.

"It's very nice at my age to have glamour attention -- something I missed out on when I was younger so it's nice to be getting it now," she says.

But the two-time Academy Award-winner says she can't take it too seriously: "It goes as fast as the walk on the red carpet does, it's over and real life comes back."

Fonda spoke in an interview to promote her new independent film, Peace, Love & Misunderstanding that debuted in limited release and on Video On Demand Friday. Fonda is also taking on a recurring role as a media executive in Aaron Sorkin's new HBO drama Newsroom, and has signed on to play former first lady Nancy Reagan in the Lee Daniels film The Butler, due out next year.

In Peace, Love & Misunderstanding, Fonda plays Grace, a hippie grandmother living in Woodstock, N.Y., who is reunited with her estranged daughter Diane, an uptight New York lawyer played by Catherine Keener. Fonda and Keener say their desire to work with each other was one reason both signed on for the film.

Keener, who has garnered Oscar nominations for her roles in Capote and Being John Malkovich, admits to being a bit awed when meeting her co-star, saying "That was just cool for me."

Fonda says she found a friend in Keener that she wanted to hold on to. "When I was younger -- you make a movie and it's over and you go on and you don't necessarily stay in touch but you're older you realize, 'If I want to be her friend I'm going to have to really make it happen.' So I've tried to stay in touch. We've stayed pals."

Scotty McCreery gets CMT award as graduation gift

GARNER, N.C. -- Less than 12 hours before his graduation from Garner High School, country music singer Scotty McCreery was in Nashville picking up a major award Wednesday night.

And the fact that it was for a music video shot at his beloved high school made it even sweeter.

"This award is special to me because I got to film this at my home high school," McCreery said as he accepted the Breakthrough Video of the Year Award at the CMT Music Awards.

McCreery, the 2011 American Idol winner, graduated from Garner High on Thursday morning at the Raleigh Convention Center.

The high school was the backdrop for his video for the single "The Trouble With Girls," and about 70 of his classmates and friends got to take part. It was shot on a Saturday last October.

"It's kind of a high school story about boys and girls and first love -- kind of innocent glances," director Roman White said on the day of filming.

McCreery especially thanked White in his acceptance speech Wednesday night, calling him "a funny guy." White also has helmed videos for Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, and Justin Bieber.

McCreery also performed a bit of his new single, "Water Tower Town," on Wednesday night's show.

This is his third country music award in the past year. He received top new artist awards at both the Academy of Country Music Awards and the American Country Awards.

McCreery has hit one milestone after another since winning "Idol" a year ago. His first album, "Clear As Day," has gone platinum and he has two gold singles -- "I Love You This Big" and "The Trouble With Girls." He's performed everywhere from the World Series to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

In between it all, he even found time to pitch on the Garner High Trojans baseball team.

He will be on tour with fellow country singer Brad Paisley this summer, and plans to enroll as a freshman at North Carolina State University in the fall.

'Idol' winner Phillip Phillips undergoes surgery

LOS ANGELES -- American Idol winner Phillip Phillips, who was plagued by serious kidney problems during the singing contest, is recovering from surgery.

A spokeswoman for series producer 19 Entertainment said Thursday that the operation went well for the 21-year-old Phillips. Leslie Fradkin says the singer from Leesburg, Ga., will be ready for the July 6 start of the American Idol national concert tour.

The guitar-playing Phillips defeated 16-year-old Jessica Sanchez to become the Fox talent competition's 11th season victor last month.
