Hens drop road contest to Norfolk

NORFOLK — The Mud Hens managed just six hits and dropped a 2-1 decision to Norfolk on Saturday night.

Toledo wasted a fine outing by starter Ramon Garcia and three relievers, who limited the Tides to just five hits and one earned run, and suffered its fifth loss in the last six games.

The Tides scored an unearned run in the first inning. Jason Pridie opened the game with a double, and one out later Russ Canzler hit a slow roller down the third-base line. Canzler beat out the grounder for a single, but Kevin Russo threw wildly to first for an error that allowed Pridie to score.

Norfolk added a run in the fourth when Yamaico Navarro slammed a home run to left.

Garcia was otherwise solid, giving up just five hits and no walks while fanning four in just his second appearance this season. Mud Hens relievers Luke Putkonen, Kenny Faulk, and Jade Todd allowed no hits and two walks in four scoreless innings.

But Toledo struggled against former Tigers farmhand Jair Jurrjens and three Norfolk relievers.

The Hens’ run came in the fifth inning when, with two outs, Brandon Douglas singled, stole second, and came home on Quintin Berry’s single.

The only other inning the Mud Hens advanced a runner past second base was the third, when Russo singled, then advanced to third on Douglas’ single. But Douglas was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double, and after a walk to Berry, Argenis Diaz flew out to end the inning.
