The Mud Hens will open their 2003 season at Fifth Third Field, marking just the second time since 1997 that the Hens have begun a season with a home game.

That is just one of the quirks of the schedule that the team officially released yesterday. Among the other oddities were a Saturday game that will start at noon, three games starting at 10:30 a.m. - including back-to-back games in May - and a scheduled doubleheader.

The Hens will open the season at Fifth Third on Thursday, April3, against Louisville, with the first pitch set for 1 p.m.

That will mark the first game in a six-game homestand that includes a noon start on April5. The noon start will allow the team to plan its second annual season-opening gala in the evening.

The three morning games, dubbed “School Celebration Days” to involve area students, are set for April29 against Columbus and May13 and 14 versus Buffalo.

The doubleheader is scheduled in Richmond on June 25, following an off-day for the Hens. The Braves traditionally schedule one twinbill per season.

Toledo also will be home on Easter (April20 vs. Norfolk), Memorial Day (May26 vs. Ottawa), the Fourth of July (vs. Syracuse) and Labor Day (Sept.1 vs. Indianapolis).

In general, Hens games will start at 6:30 p.m. on weekdays in April and May and at 7 p.m. on weekdays during June, July and August, as well as on Fridays and Saturdays, and at 2 p.m. on Sundays.
