SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Max Scherzer delivered another dominant start as the Mud Hens defeated the Syracuse Chiefs 6-3 last night at Alliance Bank Stadium.

Scherzer went seven innings and gave up three hits, striking out seven and walking one.

On May 20 after being sent down from Detroit, Scherzer posted a one-hit, eight-inning, 10-strikeout performance in his first start with Toledo.

Second baseman Carlos Guillen had three doubles and left fielder Ryan Strieby drove in five runs last night.

The Hens scored two runs in the top of the first. Scott Sizemore led off the game with a single. Guillen later doubled to put runners on second and third with one out. Strieby then hit a two-run double to put Toledo ahead 2-0.

The Chiefs began the bottom of the second with back-to-back doubles by Josh Whitesell and Chase Lambin. However, Lambin's hit was a line drive that looked as if it would be caught, so Whitesell had to hold up causing him to only advance to third. Luis Ordaz brought him in with a sacrifice fly to left field, cutting the Toledo lead in half.

Toledo designated hitter Max Leon singled to begin the third inning, stretching his hit streak to five games. Guillen followed with an RBI double. Leon raced home to give the Hens a 3-1 lead.

Syracuse had runners on second and third with one out in the fifth, but Scherzer slammed the door shut with consecutive strikeouts.

Toledo added insurance runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Max St-Pierre led things off with a double. Ben Guez struck out before Sizemore singled to put two runners in scoring position. St-Pierre then scored on a Leon sac fly. Guillen hit his third double of the game and a Strieby single cleared the bases, giving the Mud Hens a 6-1 lead.

Syracuse scored two runs in the ninth on a home run by Lambin.

Toledo has its second off day of the season today. They resume play tomorrow at Buffalo.
