Johnson's double breaks stalemate

FORT MILL, S.C. -- A day after their game against the Charlotte Knights was suspended in the eighth inning because of rain, the Toledo Mud Hens hoped to gain the upper hand when play resumed Wednesday.

But after playing five more innings, the Hens fell to Charlotte 5-4 in 14 innings.

The regularly scheduled Wednesday game was to be played following the conclusion of the first and was not complete at presstime.

In the first game, Toledo was tied with Charlotte 4-4 when the elements halted play.

In the bottom of the 14th, Charlotte's Greg Golson hit a leadoff single to right field off Toledo reliever Jose Ortega.

Dan Johnson followed with a line drive to right field for a double, which scored Golson and gave the Knights the victory.

Charlotte relief pitcher Donnie Veal threw two scoreless innings, giving up two hits and two walks while striking out two to earn his first victory of the season with the Knights.

Toledo had a chance to go ahead in the 13th inning after Argenis Diaz reached base on a single, advanced to second on a base hit by Omir Santos, and then got to third on a wild pitch by Veal. But with two outs Audy Ciriaco grounded out to second base to end the inning.

Toledo also had a chance in the top of the 11th when Santos doubled to left field off Anthony Carter. The scoring threat ended after Ciriaco, the next Hens batter, hit to second baseman Jose Castro, who threw Santos out at third.

In the earlier part of the game, played on Tuesday, Brad Eldred hit a 2-run home run off Charlotte starter Charles Shirek, his 14th blast of the season. Justin Henry and Santos each had two hits, including a double, for Toledo.

Charlotte's Golson finished 3 for 6 with three runs scored.
