Hens' youth outpaces Tides' hurler in win

Former major leaguer Moyer is victim

NORFOLK, Va. -- Turnabout being fair play, it was only fitting that the Toledo Mud Hens defeated the Norfolk Tides 3-2 Friday night after being turned back by the Tides by the same score Thursday night.

While the Friday scores were the same, the ages of the starting pitchers provided a big contrast.

Norfolk started former major leaguer Jamie Moyer, 49, who signed a minor league contract with the Norfolk parent Baltimore Orioles on June 6.

The Hens countered with Jacob Turner. The 21-year-old righthander gave up just one earned run and four hits in six innings in a brilliant outing against the Tide.

Moyer, pitched seven innings with seven strikeouts. He gave up two earned runs on seven hits.

The southpaw did not walk a batter while throwing 66 of his 103 pitches for strikes.Moyer has now allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits in 12.0 innings.

Turner walked two and struck out six for his second victory against one loss. Turner threw 60 of his 104 pitches for strikes.

The Hens opened the scoring in the top of the third .

With one out, Brent Dlugach was hit by a Moyer pitch. Justin Henry's single sent Dlugach to second. Argenis Diaz followed with a single to right that loaded the bases.

All stayed put on Jared Head's fly ball to left, but Brad Eldred followed with a an RBI single that scored Dlugach and a throwing error on the Tides shortstop allowed Henry to score as well.

Norfolk answered in the bottom half of the inning, cutting the lead to 2-1 on a Xavier Avery double.

In the sixth, the Mud Hen's Ben Guez doubled to left after two were out. Toledo catcher Rob Brantly then singled to center field to score Guez.

That is all the "Hen Pen" needed. Collin Ballester, Darin Downs, and Chris Bootcheck came in relief and sealed the one-run victory.

The three relievers did not give up a hit. Balester struck out two and Bootcheck struck out three, after giving up two walks.

Guez and Brad each tallied two hits, and were the only Toledo batters with multiple hits.
