LOUISVILLE -- The Mud Hens suffered their sixth consecutive setback as Louisville used its extra-base power to claim a 5-2 victory on Tuesday.
The Bats finished with nine hits, but had five doubles and a triple to score twice in the fourth and three more in the fifth as Toledo suffered its fifth consecutive road loss. Then Hens are 30 games under the .500 mark with a 44-74 record, the worst record in the International League.
Toledo jumped in front with a pair of runs in the second inning. Danny Dorn started the rally with a one-out single, and with two outs Louisville starter Nick Masset, who was making a rehab start with the Bats, walked Matt Young.
Todd Redmond came on in relief of Masset and walked Audy Ciriaco to load the bases before giving up a two-run single to Bryan Holaday.
Louisville tied the game in the fourth when Hens starter Thad Weber gave up a double to Mike Costanzo, a run-scoring double to Neftali Soto, and a two-out RBI single to Chris Valaika.
The Bats took the lead for good with three runs in the fifth as Bill Rhinehart led off with a double, then came home on a Didi Gregorius triple.
Henry Rodriguez doubled in Gregorius, and a double by Costanzo plated Rodriguez.
Toledo did get a run back in the eighth. Redmond gave up a leadoff double to Cale Iorg and Justin Henry walked.
One out later, Dorn hit a ground ball that eventually turned into a double play, but Henry stayed in a rundown long enough to allow Iorg to score.
The two teams continue their four-game series today with a 7:05 p.m. start.
NOTES: Tuesday the Tigers announced that they had released LHP Fu-Te Ni, who had been on the Mud Hens disabled list since May 20 after season-ending elbow surgery. Ni pitched in seven games for Toledo this year, making five starts, and had a 2-2 record with a 4.56 ERA.
… RHP Chris Bootcheck suffered a broken left humerus as well as damage to the labrum of his left, or nonthrowing, shoulder catching a popped-up bunt Sunday. He will not pitch for the Mud Hens again this year.
