Mud Hens

Old teammates haunt Mud Hens again

LOUISVILLE — Two former Mud Hens tormented their old team and led Louisville to a 6-4 victory on Friday.

Mike Hessman, who played third base for Toledo for five seasons, hammered a pair of home runs against his former team for the second game in a row.

Armando Galarraga, who pitched for the Hens in 2008 and 2010, allowed just one earned run in five innings to claim the win.

The Bats took control of the game with a four-run first inning off Mud Hens starter Pat Misch.

Billy Hamilton led off that inning with a double, then stole third as Misch walked Emmanuel Burriss.

Hamilton and Burriss worked a double steal to score Hamilton and send Burriss to third, and Burriss scored on a double by Henry Rodriguez. One out later, Denis Phipps homered to cap the rally.

Toledo got one run back in the third inning when Argenis Diaz doubled, took third on a wild pitch by Galarraga, then scored on Quintin Berry’s groundout.

The Bats restored their four-run lead in the bottom of the third when Hessman homered.

The Mud Hens managed to score an unearned run in the fifth without the benefit of a hit. Jordan Lennerton drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a groundout, then took third when Bryan Holaday reached on a fielding error.

Diaz drew a walk to load the bases, and Berry walked to force home Lennerton. But Galarraga got Kevin Russo to fly out to end the threat. Hessman hit his second home run of the night in the sixth off Toledo reliever Jess Todd.

The score remained 6-2 until the ninth when Toledo scored twice. With one out Holaday doubled, and with two outs Berry singled to push Holaday to third.

Both runners came home on Russo’s double, but Nick Castellanos struck out to end the game.
