Late Syracuse run sinks Mud Hens

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuse scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to claim a 4-3 win over the Mud Hens Thursday.

Toledo managed just five hits in the contest, none after the fourth inning, to lose its second in a row and fourth in the last five games.

The Chiefs’ game-winning rally began when Jhonatan Solano singled off Hens reliever Blaine Hardy. Brian Goodwin sacrificed Solano to second, a groundout by Destin Hood moved Solano to third, and Solano scored on a two-out single by Brandon Laird.

Toledo twice held leads in the contest. The Mud Hens scored with a run in the second inning off Chiefs starter Omar Poveda with singles by James McCann, Jordan Lennerton, and Daniel Fields produced a run.

The Hens again took the lead by scoring two more in the fourth. With one out McCann singled, Lennerton walked, and both scored on a double by Fields.

Syracuse again tied the game in the fifth. Laird singled and Emmanuel Burriss walked, Josh Johnson sacrificed both up a base, and Laird scored on a sacrifice fly by former Hen Will Rhymes. After a walk to Scott Hairston, Burriss scored on a single by Brock Peterson.
