Ryan Carpenter, a left-handed pitcher who signed a major-league contract with the Tigers this off-season.

  • The Tigers will open spring training Feb. 13, which means baseball season is coming. Here is a daily look at players with possible ties to the 2018 Mud Hens, whose home opener is set for April 12 vs. Pawtucket.

    LHP Ryan Carpenter

History: The Tigers signed Carpenter to a major-league contract, after the 27-year-old was named to the Pacific Coast League’s postseason all-star team last year. Despite pitching his home games in Albuquerque, a notable home-run haven, he finished with a 10-9 record, a 4.15 ERA that ranked third-best in the PCL, and 161 strikeouts in 156 innings. After the all-star break, Carpenter had a deceptive 5-3 record with a 3.21 ERA. He finished second in the PCL in strikeouts and was second among starters in fewest baserunners per nine innings (12.07) and strikeouts per nine innings (9.32).

Future: Signing a major-league contract means the left-hander is on the 40-man roster and will receive an opportunity to make the Tigers starting rotation. If that does not happen, expect him to anchor the Mud Hens starting staff.
