Poetry slam slated at UT's Scott Park

Writer and performance poet Khary Kimani Turner will star in the New Works Writers Series Northwest Ohio Poetry Slam Competition on Friday in the auditorium of the University of Toledo Scott Park campus. Local poets, singers, rappers, and other performers with a passion for rhyme and the spoken word are invited to compete for trophies.

Last year 30 performers showed their best for 200 spectators. This year, performances are to begin at 8 p.m., with late registrations taken at 7 p.m.

Individual and team registrations are $15; spectator admission is $5. Entry forms are available at Toledo-Lucas County Public Library branches and Main. Information: 242-8721.


Actor and sound-effects whiz Michael Winslow will perform this weekend in the Cla-Zel Theater, 127 North Main St., Bowling Green. The star of many Police Academy films is to appear at 8 p.m. Friday and 8 and 10 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $15 and $20 at the theater, where the box office is open from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. daily.


In Cleveland, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will present an evening of music and conversation with hall of fame inductee John Cale at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Cale founded the Velvet Underground with Lou Reed and Sterling Morrison. Tickets are $15 for the public, $12 for members. Information: Ticketmaster, 216-241-5555.


The Toledo Jazz Society will present a Holiday Dinner Dance on Dec. 13 in the Franciscan Center, 6832 Convent Blvd., Sylvania The cocktail hour will begin at 6 p.m., and at 8 p.m. the Toledo Jazz Orchestra will perform in a cabaret setting. Vocalist Lori Lefevre-Johnson will join the band for several numbers.

First Night Toledo 2001, the eighth annual family celebration of the arts all over the downtown, is set for Dec. 31. Last year some 35,000 people came to this Performing Arts Council of Toledo event.

This year, some 1,400 area artists will present music, dance, theater, and other activities in more than 35 venues. Activities for children begin at 4 p.m. in SeaGate Centre and continue through fireworks at midnight. Admission buttons are $7 until Christmas and are being sold at Food Town, Pharm, and Kroger stores, as well as Huntington Banks. After Christmas, tickets are $10. Children 4 and under are free.

MICHIGAN

The Chenille Sisters' Christmas Show is to begin at 8 p.m. Friday in The Ark, 316 South Main St., Ann Arbor. Tickets are $20. The RFD Boys will present their bluegrass at 8 p.m. Saturday; tickets are $10. On Tuesday, Johnny Cunningham and Susan McKeown, Scottish fiddler and Irish singer, will harmonize in an 8 p.m. gig; tickets are $15. Information: 734-761-1800.
