First round of Blues Battle starts Sunday
10/1/2003The Black Swamp Blues Society's seventh annual Blues Battle Competition begins Sunday in the Longhorn Saloon, 946 Phillips Ave. Participating bands include Josh Boyd & the VIP Band, Poe Ditch, Suzy Divine and the Blues Attack, Johnny Reed and the Houserockers, Lightin' Rod and the Thunderbolts, and the Rollers.
The second band preliminary will be held Oct. 19 in Mickey Finn's Pub, 602 Lagrange St., and a solo artist's night is scheduled Oct. 26 in Sodbuster Bar & Grille, 5758 North Main St., Sylvania.
The final band competition (the top three bands from the two preliminary rounds) will be held Nov. 1 in the Ohio Theatre, 3112 North Lagrange St.
All competitions start at 7 p.m. Admission is $5.
The winning band and solo artist will each receive cash winnings and travel expenses to compete in February at the 2004 International Blues Challenge in Memphis.
Twentieth Century, the 1934 screwball comedy starring John Barrymore and Carole Lombard, has been scheduled at 1 p.m. tomorrow in Super Cinemas, 1301 East Mall Dr., Holland, as the latest entry in National Amusements' Silver Screen Classics program.
The price of $1 will buy viewers a ticket, popcorn, and a soft drink. The Silver Screen Classics program is geared toward senior citizens, but movie fans of all ages are welcome to attend.
Theatre Kidz will present a hip-hop version of Romeo and Juliet at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the Collingwood Arts Center, 2413 Collingwood Blvd. Additional show times will be at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Glinda's Bubble is scheduled at 9:30 p.m. Saturday; tickets are $5. Seven Nations returns to the pub at 8:30 p.m. Oct. 8. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 the day of the show.
The Caribbean musical Once On This Island will open Friday in the University of Toledo's Center for Performing Arts. Performances are scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday, with additional performances Oct. 8-12. Infinite Number of Sounds, an electro-rock/media art performance group, will perform a free concert from 8 to 9:30 p.m. Friday in the Little Theater at the Toledo Museum of Art.
Toledo-based band Fetish Doll will be filming a live concert movie Saturday in Headliners, 4500 North Detroit Ave. The docudrama, filmed by Chicago filmmaker/director John Covert, will be aired on several cable networks across the country and distributed in Europe. Guests for the concert filming include Coilburn, Inkvine, and Simple Wisdom. Doors open at 7 p.m. for the all-ages show, with Fetish Doll taking the stage at 10:30.
