10/10/2003

A week of concerts marks the opening of the Detroit Symphony's new home, the $60 million Max M. Fisher Music Center. Violinist Itzhak Perlman is featured in tomorrow's concert; Smokey Robinson performs Sunday.

The 2,000-seat Orchestra Hall has been renovated, complete with a 17,000-square-foot lobby, new shops and dining services, and 18,000 square feet of back-stage facilities for the musicians. New to the center are a 15,000-square-foot education complex and the Music Box, a 500-seat recital hall.

“Our glorious new-old home brings to the orchestra world-class facilities,” said longtime music director Neeme Jarvi.

Scheduled to open on the grounds in 2005 is the $122.5 million Detroit High School for the Fine, Performing & Communicative Arts.

Neeme Jarvi leads the Detroit Symphony at 6 p.m. tomorrow at the Max M. Fisher Music Center. The concert is sold out. Smokey Robinson joins the DSO at 7 p.m. Sunday. Tickets range from $26 to $110. Performers this week include Oscar Peterson and Branford Marsalis at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the main concert hall and the Beaux Arts Trio at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Music Box. Information: 313-576-5111.
