SnoCore to heat up UT crowd
3/19/2004The 2004 SnoCore Tour lived up to its name, arriving in Ohio during March's biggest snowstorm.
"I'm glad I don't have to drive in this," said Derek Gledhill of Southern California as the SnoCore Tour bus pulled into Cincinnati earlier this week.
Featuring Trapt, Smile Empty Soul, Finger 11, and Strata, the SnoCore Tour comes to the University of Toledo Monday night.
Smile Empty Soul was formed in Santa Clarita by singer-guitarist Sean Danielsen, bassist Ryan Martin, and drummer Gledhill in 1998. The band took its name from one of its songs about hypocrisy. "It was a comment on society going through their daily lives unfulfilled. They put a front on for everybody but inside they're hollow, dissatisfied with their life," Gledhill explained.
The group played the Los Angeles club scene for several years, developing a sound that is both brash and melodic.
The group's self-titled debut CD on the Atlantic subsidiary Lava Records has sold 360,000 copies and features songs of rebellion, angst, and rejection.
The expletive-filled song "Bottom of a Bottle," a chilling cry of lost love and loneliness, made it to the alternative-rock charts and pushed "Smile Empty Soul" into Billboard's Top 200 album chart. The band's newest single, "Nowhere Kids," describes a generation without hope or ambition, and the video has earned a spot on the MTV2 and Fuse music channels.
Trapt, a four-man band from Los Gatos, Calif., sold more than a million copies of its self-titled Warner Bros. debut album.
Featuring singer-guitarist Chris Brown, guitarist Simon Ormandy, bassist Peter Charell, and drummer Monty, Trapt's metal-rock hit "Headstrong" earned 2003 Billboard Music Awards for Best Modern Rock Track and Best Rock Track.
The 2004 SnoCore Tour stops at the University of Toledo for a 7 p.m. concert Monday in Savage Hall. Tickets, $14 or free for UT students, are available from the box office and Ticketmaster outlets. Information: 419-530-4653.
