Detroiters tweak Motown sound

Electric 6 will be in concert tomorrow night at Headliners.

The Motown sound gets a different kind of spin with Electric 6, a six-man Detroit band that will be in concert tomorrow night at Headliners.

With a dance-powered musical style that melds rock power with disco beats, Electric 6 started out as the Wildbunch, releasing its fuzz-soaked club music on Detroit's Flying Bomb Records.

After a legal challenge, the Wildbunch changed its name in 2001 and morphed into the Electric 6.

Known for its blend of hefty bass beats and wry lyrics, the members of Electric 6 list their oddball stage names as Dick Valentine on lead vocals; The Colonel and Johnny Na$hinal on guitars; M. on drums; John R. Dequindre on bass, and Tait Nucleus on synthesizers.

The group's first single, "Danger! High Voltage," was a hit on the British dance-club scene, as were its two followup singles, "Gay Bar" and "Dance Commander."

Last year, Electric 6 remixed "Danger! High Voltage," adding backing vocals by Detroit rock ace Jack White of the White Stripes, and the tune jumped to No. 2 on the UK charts.

Electric 6 released its first full-length CD, "Fire," in May, 2003, and the Detroiters have been touring Europe and the United States steadily ever since.

Electric 6 will be in concert tomorrow night at Headliners, 4500 North Detroit Ave. Doors open at 9 p.m. Opening band Stylex performs at 10:30, and Electric 6 takes the stage at 11:30.
