Headliners mixes it up

4/15/2005

Bands with diverse sounds and styles that are on the cutting edge of hard rock and heavy metal will be featured Thursday night at Headliners.

The lead act is A Static Lullaby, a band that has been lumped into the latest subgenre of metal: emocore, which means they're like a hard-core thrash band, but with stronger melodies and choruses. Their latest disc, "Faso Latido," is on Columbia Records.

Second on the bill is Anberlin, a band from Orlando, Fla.'s fertile metal scene. Formed from the ashes of a Christian punk band, they feature lyrics with a positive bent, soaring harmonies, and a sound that has been compared to Third Eye Blind. Their latest disc, "Never Take Friendship Personal," is on the Tooth and Nail label.

The Black Maria is coming off a showcase performance at the South By Southwest conference in Austin, Tex., showing off their brand of alternative rock and punk. They've toured with acts such as Queens of the Stone Age, Ted Leo and Pharmacists, and The Distillers. Their latest disc is "Lead Us to Reason" on the Victory label.

Finally, The Chemistry is a California band whose new release, "The Chemistry," is due out Tuesday on the Razor & Tie label. The band started with a hard-core sound, but has dropped back a notch in intensity.

Tickets for the all-ages show that starts at 6 p.m. at Headliners, 4500 North Detroit Ave., are $10 in advance and $12 the night of the show. They can be purchased at Culture Clash, Allied Records, Freon Beats, and through Ticketmaster.
