Mime uses movement to create illusions, tell tales

10/20/2005

When choosing his career path, Pittsburgh-based actor Dan Kamin opted for a life of mime.

Kamin performs tonight at the Maumee Indoor Theater. He performs a Halloween concert with the Toledo Symphony on Sunday afternoon at the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle.

Kamin says he was inspired to become a magician at age 12 after seeing the 1953 film Houdini.

Years later, while in college at Carnegie Mellon University, he was drawn back into the theater after seeing a mime performance by faculty member Jewel Walker.

Kamin said Walker "showed me the secrets of how to use movement to create amazing illusions and tell stories."

Tonight's program investigates the physical comedy of Charlie Chaplin. Sunday's program features Kamin in a production titled "The Haunted Orchestra."

Dan Kamin presents "Funny Bones" at 7:30 tonight at the Maumee Indoor Theater. Tickets are $5. Kamin joins conductor Chelsea Tipton and the Toledo Symphony in a Halloween program at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle. Tickets are $15 and $20, half price for children under 12.
