Concerts explore genius of Leonard Bernstein
1/12/2006The Toledo Symphony presents two concerts featuring Jamie Bernstein, daughter of composer/conductor Leonard Bernstein and his music Jan. 21.
The first is the Mercy Health Partners Family Series, Bernstein on Broadway - For Kids, scheduled at 11 a.m. at the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle. Tickets are $15 and $20 for adults, and half price for children 12 and younger.
The second concert, presented by the KeyBank Pops Series, features Bernstein on Broadway with the symphony at 8 p.m. in the Stranahan Theater, 4645 Heatherdowns Blvd. Ms. Bernstein will present a tour of her father's music for the stage, including family memories, backstage stories, and selections from Candide, On The Town, and West Side Story. A second show has been added for The Friends of the Bob and Tom Comedy Tour, sponsored by WIOT-FM Jan. 27 at the Stranahan Theater. Shows are scheduled at 8 and 10:30 p.m. with Drew Hastings, Pat Godwin, Greg "Flute Man" Warren, and Greg Hahn with Donnie Baker, emceed by Kristie Lee. The University of Toledo will host the American Museum of Natural History's Margaret Mead Film & Video Traveling Festival Jan. 26-28 at 7 p.m. in Lab Theatre. Each year titles are selected from the annual Mead Festival for this year-long program which brings nonfiction work to communities throughout the United States. Highlights include Afghanistan Unveiled & Madamn Ti Zo, Mararet Mead & Jaguar, and How to Fix the World & Oscar. A $3 donation at the door is suggested. Information: 419-530-2452.
The Stinky Cheese Man and other Fair(l)y (Stoopid) Tales will be staged at 2 and 4 p.m. Jan. 22 at Owens Community College, 30335 Oregon Rd., Perrysburg. The musical adaptation of the popular children's book will be performed on the college's Mainstage Theatre. The performance is the second in the Fine and Performing Arts Family Fun Sunday Series. Disney On Ice presents three jungle adventures - Disney's The Jungle Book, Tarzan, and The Lion King - Jan. 25-29 at the Toledo Sports Arena, 1 Main St. The show features Academy Award-winning music and a Jungle Book score set to a swing beat. Performances will be 7 p.m. Jan. 25-27; 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 and 7 p.m. Jan. 28, and 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m Jan. 29. The Village Players will hold auditions for Wally's Cafe at 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the theater, 2740 Upton Ave. The comedy is about a couple who run a diner near Las Vegas in the 1940s, and their only customer (it seems) is a Illinois girl hitchhiking to Hollywood and stardom. Years later she returns in a limousine to bail out her old friends. Production dates will be March 10-25. Information: 419-885-7898.

The Ann Arbor Folk Festival takes place at 7 p.m. Jan. 27 and 6 p.m. Jan. 28 in Hill Auditorium on the University of Michigan campus. The Ark's annual fund-raising event, the festival celebrates folk and roots music heard at the Ark throughout the year. Highlights of Jan. 27 include the Robert Cray Band, Iris DeMent, and the Greencards. On Jan. 28, the Lyle Lovett Trio, Jonatha Brooke, the Holmes Brothers, and others perform.
